Writerly Wednesday

Hello all! Welcome to another week of Writerly Wednesday. :) I do want to apologize for my lack of ambition on my blog lately.  Today's meme is all about writing, whether I'm telling you some exciting news about my road to publishing my debut novel, Into the Spiral, or I'm sharing sites and articles I've found interesting or useful or I'm introducing you to someone/something new. Today, I'd like to introduce you to my writing twin, Beth Ann Masarik.

Beth doesn't know that I'm doing this. :) We met almost a year and a half ago through Richelle Mead (as we like to tell the story). We'd both answered a post of hers on Facebook, started messaging and the rest they say is history. We now talk constantly, including text messages (which drive my hubby crazy because he thinks my phone says "why am I on a diet" every time she texts LOL). We have so many things in common and think alike so much that we've dubbed each other our "twin".

I met Beth shortly after she signed with Otherworld Publications so through her, I got to see what publishing with them was like. I was so impressed (and am still so impressed) that when I queried my own book, I went to them. :) Beth now has 2 short stories and one full-length novel out: Murderous Regrets (short), Moon Spirit (short) and The World Among Us: Prince of Darkness (novel).

Beth also created and runs Literary Lunes Magazine, a now bi-monthly online publication that she edits and formats herself (as well as writing articles for). She also is currently working on book 2 of the TWAU trilogy, Daughter of Light, as well as putting together an anthology of TWAU short stories and very tentatively starting up her own publishing company, currently named Literary Lunes Publications. She is also just finishing edits and polishing up an anthology, Writings From the Heart, which all proceeds will go to the pediatric cardiology department at the Stephen and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York. The anthology is set to release June 6!

On top of everything else Beth has going on, she's also getting married on October 14!

Beth has always inspired me with her many projects, getting herself out there into the writing community and meeting people. She recently even interviewed Kristin Cast (half of the amazing duo that brought us the House of Night series) for Literary Lunes magazine. She works hard and has become an amazing friend in the short time I've known her. So I just wanted to take a few minutes today to say THANK YOU to Beth for becoming my friend.

You can find Beth everywhere on the web:
Her website

Goodreads
Facebook
TWAU on Facebook

Buy Beth's books!
Murderous Regrets:  Amazon  Smashwords
Moon Spirit:  Amazon
TWAU: Prince of Darkness:  Amazon  B&N  Smashwords  Otherworld

That's all for today, folks! I hope you've enjoyed meeting Beth as much as I have! :)

Happy Wednesday!

Charade Blog Tour - Book Boyfriends with Cambria Hebert

Hello, everyone! Welcome to my stop on the Charade Blog Tour, running May 14-June 14. Charade is the second book in Cambria Hebert's Heven and Hell series... And this book is highly anticipated by yours truly. Let me tell you a little more about it:

Dying at the hands of a psycho was a shock. Having my life returned to me by an angel was incredible. Being named a Supernatural Treasure and being given Sam as my guard was pretty darn awesome. Acquiring a debt for it all—well, I should have seen it coming.

Now here we are, fighting demons from Hell, caring for a boy that I just don’t trust, and traveling to faraway places to return a treasure to its rightful place. Nothing is as it seems. Everyone wears a mask; everyone puts on a charade. It’s up to us to separate the truth from the lies and reality from fiction. A hard task when my new reality involves fallen angels, witches and dragons… and did I mention Hell?

Anchoring me down through it all is Sam. Sam, who must face tragedies of his own and is put to the test again and again.
If we fail in our task, life as we know it—life as you know it—will end. Forever.

Sounds exciting, doesn't it?? Today, Cambria is here to talk about HOTNESS... and by HOTNESS, she means Book Boyfriends, those male characters that make us all swoon. Take it away, Cambria!

Today I am here to talk about Hottness. That’s right, hotness. What exactly is hotness, you ask? I will tell you. Hottness is when someone has the ability to make your heart race, your palms feel sweaty and your stomach feel like it has a million butterflies fluttering inside it. It makes you sigh, smile and giggle. Sometimes when you are reading a particularly good hotness you glance around guiltily to see if anyone knows what you are doing…

I am sure we have all experienced this at one time or another.

First loves, current loves… donuts. What? Like you don’t lust after those delicately fried concoctions that are dripping with sinfully, likable icing. Yeah, you know what I mean.
I myself experience the “hotness effect” every time I watch the Vampire Diaries on Thursday nights or every time I read a book with a good male character.

So I guess by definition Hottness = Book boyfriends

It’s a hot topic – DUH – because its full of hotness. But mainly because we all have a list of book boyfriends, movie boyfriends, real life boyfriends (lol) and food boyfriends (don’t even pretend you don’t).

So what makes a character into a book boyfriend? (note: yes, there must be book girlfriends… but I am a girl who likes guys so I’m talking about boyfriends)

As the author of a completely swoon worthy male character (say it isn’t so!) I think I can answer this question. Well, you be the judge of that.
Here to help me with my Book Boyfriend must have list is Sam himself.
Let’s ask Sam himself why he makes a good book boyfriend. Sam?
Sam: You think I make a good boyfriend? Did you read Masquerade. I do some very bad things. I don’t think that makes me a good boyfriend.
Cambria: That’s exactly why you make a good boyfriend! Look at the naughty things you do all because you were trying to help the girl you love.
Sam: Naughty? That’s one way to put it.
Cambria: Okay, then. How about the gift you give Heven in Masquerade. Don’t you think that qualifies you as a book boyfriend?
Sam: Which gift? The whistle? I gave that to her for protection.
Cambria: Because you love her. How about the keys?
Sam: Those keys turn out to be a lot more than we thought.
Cambria: You are making this interview very difficult.
Sam: *Grins* That’s why I’m a good book boyfriend. I’m not agreeable.
Cambria: Yes, well. How about that first kiss with Heven?
Sam: A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell.
Cambria: Awww. So you admit to being a gentleman?
Sam: *Laughs* Sure.
Cambria: Okay, then. Tell us what makes a great Book Girlfriend.
Sam: Be Heven.
Cambria: Be Heven? That’s your answer?
Sam: It’s the truth.
Cambria: *Sighs very loudly* There’s a Bubble Tea place across the street . You can go now. Your work is done.
Sam: *Grins* Want me to get you one?
Cambria: Sure. You choose the flavor.
Sam exits.

Frankly I am relieved he is gone, as cute and charming as he is. LOL. Do you see what I had to deal with while I was writing? Sam is most certainly the most difficult character I have ever written. He is very mysterious. I will let you all in on a little secret. When I first wrote Masquerade there was no Sam POV. I know it’s awful isn’t it?! Can you imagine a book without hearing his thoughts and feelings? But here’s the thing, when I decided to add him into the draft I realized I didn’t know him at all. I wrote an entire book about him and he still managed to keep himself a secret.

So I had to get to know him. And during that process I learned some qualities that make Sam a book boyfriend. Here are top picks of what makes a male character into a book boyfriend:
1.     Inner conflict. No one likes a guy who has it all. No one. Even if it appears a guy has it all there has to be something that they are conflicted over, something they have to overcome.
2.     Protective –ness. We all sign over a guy who will stand in the way of a killer or threat to the one they love. It’s romantic. A guy who will harm themselves so his love isn’t harmed.
3.     Stubborness. A book boyfriend doesn’t give up. Even when the cards are stacked against him.
4.     An empty stomach. Come on you know it’s true. No one wants to read about a guy who eats only salad and takes danty bites. We want a guy who can shove half a sandwich in his mouth and chew like no bodies business. It’s manly.
5.     Romantic. This embodies a lot of qualities and usually the best romantic moments are when the guy isn’t trying to be romantic. They are just trying to show someone how they feel and it makes us all sigh.
6.     HOTTNESS. Yup, he has to be hot. He has to look good. Muscles help. Nice eyes are a plus. I personally like wide shoulders and messy hair. LOL.  Feel free to look up at the Sam picture to refresh your memory of HOTTNESS.
7.     Mysterious. We want a puzzle to figure out. It’s a challenge.

So those are my top characteristics that make characters need to have to embody a good Book Boyfriend. Did I forget one? What is on your list?

Besides Sam let me tell you a few of MY favorite book boyfriends:
Riley from the Intertwined Series
Nick from the Need series
Asher from A Beautiful Dark
Jacob from Twilight
Damon from Vampire Diaries (I base this off TV because I haven’t read the books but he is at the TOP of my list)

Who are yours??

A big thanks to Erin for having me here today!!! Now if you will excuse me Sam just walked in with my Bubble Tea. He got me chocolate. Any guy who brings me chocolate definitely is worthy of a book boyfriend award. J

Thank you, Cambria (and Sam) for joining me today! I hope everyone has enjoyed this stop as much as I have. I also have to say that my Book Boyfriends include Jace Wayland, Dimitri Belikov, Fang, Ren LaRoche, and Damon Salvatore (book and show). ;-) Today you can also stop by Maria at http://anightsdreamofbooks.blogspot.com/.

Happy Sunday!

Writerly Wednesday - Writing.com

Hello, all! Welcome to another week of Writerly Wednesday, a weekly meme I created to talk about everything writerly, whether it's what's happening in my own journey to published stardom, to introduce you to something or someone fascinating, or to share my (limited) wisdom on writing. This week, I want to introduce you to a website I found when I first decided to get serious about being a writer...

Here's what they have to say for themselves: Writing.Com, the premier online community for writers of all interests and skill levels, has been going strong since 2000. We provide an extremely creative environment for authors, offering hundreds of unique writing tools and opportunities for creation and inspiration.
Whether you are a writer looking for the perfect place to store and display your masterpieces or a reader willing to offer feedback for our writers and their work, this is the website for you. No other website services the writing world better than we do!
I first joined Writing.com in January of 2008. I joined because I wanted to feel a part of a writing community, and that's exactly what I found there. I tried my hand at a few contests and even won a couple, one short story Romance Valentine's Day contest and another one, from Bard's Hall, where the theme was St. Patrick's Day. I also participated in a 1000 word daily flash fiction contest for quite a few months. Entering those contests helped me hone my craft in that I had to be more economical with my word choices. The highest word count limit was just 4000 words. That's quite a difference from the 50k+ word novels I'd been writing. :-)
In October of 2008, I stumbled upon The Witch's Circle Halloween contest. One of the prompts was to write a short story that included werewolves, vampires, ghosts, goblins, and a couple other creatures (pretty much, any creature popular at the time). That prompt sparked my first YA paranormal novel, Losing Control, which included werewolves, vampires and a ghost haunting an ancestral home. :-)
If you don't feel like writing and sharing anything, hang out on the site and read a bit. There are interactive stories where you get to pick which way the story goes next. There's poetry, word searches, madlibs and polls to take. There's a lot to do and it's a great way to practice your craft and meet a few fun people along the way!
Happy Writing (or Reading)!
EM
**While you can search for Losing Control and it shows available to order on Amazon and probably other places, this title has been taken out of production for re-editing. I will let everyone know as soon as it is available once again.**

Review - INHALE by Kendall Grey

Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams…

After years of suffocating under her boss’s scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won’t let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won’t take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.

Gavin Cassidy hasn’t been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he’s summoned to protect Zoe from hungry Fyre Elementals and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan…nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.

*This book contains graphic language, sex, and some violence. Not suitable for readers under the age of 18.

**The author will donate all profits from the sale of the JUST BREATHE trilogy to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face.

A little fangirling first...
There are so many reasons I love this book. I love that all profits from this trilogy goes towards Whale education and survival, something I know Kendall Grey believes in with her entire being. The rest of the things I love will come later in the actual review. ;-)
I've known Kendall for a little more than a year now. We met through a mutual friend a few months after I came out of my writer's closet and declared my intentions to be published and be taken seriously. Kendall was the first person to interview me and whom I talked about my upcoming novel with. We even had a Gavin-off. LOL I'll admit I was a little scared off from Kendall when I checked out her blog and saw all of the April's Fool Jackassery things on there - boy was it graphic for my virgin eyes! But I went back a few days later and am I glad I did. I found out that's only part of who Kendall is. Yes, she's loud and graphic, but she also has a heart of gold and I'm so glad to count her among my friends. :)

Onto the review...
First of all, I have to say... if you love Urban Fantasy and don't mind very "adult" novels, this is the book for you! There is a warning label on this book for a reason. But, all of it works together. The prose is amazing. The way Kendall writes grabs you by the throat and drags you in. I feel she did a great job at explaining the world she created in the Dreaming, Realis and the Elementals. There's even a glossary at the end for those who can't quite keep it straight. :) I fell into this novel from the beginning and got irritated every time I had to leave it.

Zoe Morgan is a great protagonist. Despite her extra Y-chromosone, which accounts for her awkwardness is social situations and dyslexia, she is a strong woman who's had a hard life recently. She knows what she wants and strives to get it. She loves the whales and has a preternatural connection to them, something she does whatever she has to to fight for their safety and protection. She has a great crew and friends in Adriene, Dani and Elizabeth.

Gavin Cassidy is a swoon-worthy hero. Though flawed by his years of debauchery and drinking, he steps up and becomes a man when needed. As the story goes on, we find out he's more than just a broken Sentinel and rock star. And Zoe is the one who can piece him back together.

I love the diversity of characters in this novel. Kendall did a great job on researching the various people (Aussies, Aboriginals, etc) and each character that is introduced stands alone as a strong individual. My faves other than the MCs are Scarlet and Sinnder. Scarlet is such a bitch, she's the perfect villain and Sinnder... well, really what more can I say? He's smoking hot! I can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy to see what happens with these characters next!

Overall, I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I've been waiting to read this book since meeting Kendall and it exceeded my expectations in every way! Like I said up top, if you love Urban Fantasy and don't mind graphic language and situations, this is most definitely the book for you!

You can buy INHALE here: Amazon and B&N. Add it to your Goodreads list here. Remember, all profits from this book goes towards a great cause! I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have! :)

Happy Reading!

Writerly Wednesday - Cover and Trailer Reveal!

Welcome back to another week of Writerly Wednesday, a weekly meme I created to share writerly things with all of you, whether it's to talk about my own writing/publishing adventure, to share something fun or interesting I stumbled upon, or to introduce you to new and amazing authors and books. Today I'm showcasing the charity anthology Writings from the Heart: Stories and Poetry from Around the World. Here's the AMAZING cover:

Isn't it gorgeous? I absolutely love this cover! This cover was created by the editor of the anthology, Beth Ann Masarik. Beth decided to put together this anthology to help the Cohen Children's Medical Center of NY's Pediatric Cardiology Department. Why? Because 28 years ago, Beth was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease called Tetralogy of Fellot. This is her way of giving back to a hospital that's helped her all of these years. And who doesn't like to help kids in need? The anthology features 30 authors from around the world who have written either short stories or poems all based around the idea of hope. I've read quite a few of both already and will say it's a great anthology!

The anthology will be released June 6, 2012. Beth chose this date to honor a friend who died of congenital heart disease on that day several years ago. Then, from June 13 to July 4, Beth is putting together a blog tour the anthology. Dates are still available! If you would like to be a part of it, leave a comment with your email address below or email Beth at bethannmasarik@gmail.com for more information and to tell her you want in!

Still not convinced this is a good cause? Check out the trailer Beth made for the anthology!

I hope you will purchase this anthology when it is released. I am one of the contributors and I know I will be purchasing a copy to help this great cause!

Happy Wednesday!

Writerly Wednesday - Random Silliness

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another week of Writerly Wednesday, where I share random tidbits of my writerly life, showcase a new author or publisher, or try to give sound advice I've found on various websites. This week, I'm doing something a little different. Not knowing what else to do, I asked on Facebook for 3 random words from people: a noun, a verb, and an adjective. Including my kids and babysitter, I ended up with 10 responses to my question. Here are all the words I received:

dinosaur, sad, play, fedora, skip, spectacular, mailbox, run, pouring (rain), friend, walk, quickly, bridge, flow, relaxing, bird, jog, leafy, train wreck, jump, happy, socks, fly, gigantic, cupcake, skate, frosty, rainbow, spew, ludicrous, Miller Park, eat, grainy

I'm sure you can guess which words came from my kids. ;-) I especially like 'leafy' because then Kody (my oldest) looked at the tree we were passing and said "It looks like it has green hair!" Love that!

So what did I do with all of these words? As you may have guessed, I wrote a short story . I highlighted all the words. Here is what I came up with. It's a little silly and geared more towards younger kids, but it was tons of fun to write! Enjoy! **some of the words had to change their ending to fit properly**

Tommy and Fenton Have an Adventure

On a Saturday morning in May, Tommy the T-Rex woke up to find it was a very disappointing day. It was pouring rain outside his bedroom window! The rain made Tommy sad. So he tromped out of his bedroom and headed to the kitchen, where his mom was baking cupcakes.
“Why are you sad today, Tommy T?” she asked as he sat down at the table.
“It’s raining,” he told her.
“Yes it is. Why don’t you call Fenton and you two can play inside today? I bet Fenton is as sad as you about the rain today.”
“Yeah!” Tommy exclaimed and jumped up from the table. He went to the phone and called his best friend. Now it might seem silly that a dinosaur and a bird were best friends, but Tommy and Fenton had been friends since they were babies.
Fenton agreed to come over to play and flew through the rain as fast as his little blue wings would carry him. He loved flying, but not in the rain. Fenton shook out his feathers when he arrived inside Tommy’s house and put his little brown fedora on a peg by the door.
“Let’s have an adventure,” Tommy exclaimed and raced Fenton to his room. Fenton won—because birds are always faster than T-Rexes.
“What do you want to do today?” Fenton chirped from his perch on the top of Tommy’s dresser. Tommy hunkered down and thought really hard for a moment. What should they do? Then, he had an idea!
“There’s been a train wreck on the bridge,” he told Fenton. “We have to save the people!”
“We’re off to save the people!” Fenton squeaked. They jogged around the bedroom, pretending to run to the bridge.
“Watch out for the river!” Tommy suddenly yelled. He and Fenton skated to a stop. The river flowed rapidly under the bridge, spewing yucky brown water all around them. A gigantic, leafy tree towered over them next to the bridge.
“There! We have to save that family of salamanders!” Tommy declared, pointing to a bunch of socks in the middle of the room. “Come on!”
They quickly skipped across the bridge. Tommy bent down and scooped the salamander family into his arms as the giant tree swayed in the wind.
“This is ludicrous!” Tommy exclaimed. The salamanders were hot, burning his skin. “They’re burning up!”
“Put them in the frosty mailbox!” Fenton chirped. Tommy dashed across the room and threw the socks into his clothes hamper. Both bird and dinosaur collapsed onto the floor as the bedroom door opened. Tommy’s mom looked in on them.
“Sounds like that was a spectacular rescue,” she told the boys. “Are you boys hungry?”
“Yeah!” they cheered and jumped to their feet (or hopped, in Fenton’s case).
“Look, a rainbow!” Fenton cheeped, flying towards the window to look out at the sky. Tommy quickly followed. Sure enough, a beautiful rainbow stretched across the light gray sky.
Tommy and Fenton walked down the stairs and followed Tommy’s mom into the kitchen. They were finally able to relax. Tommy’s mom put a plate of warm cupcakes on the table and the boys began to eat. Tommy was glad they weren’t grainy like the last batch she had made. Grainy cupcakes were the worst!
“Next time we should go rescue something at Miller Park,” Fenton chirped as he pecked at his cupcake.
“That would be a lot of fun,” Tommy agreed, thinking of all the happy adventures they could have.

And there you have it, my fun little story. I might have a career in children's literature some day! LOL Hope you've enjoyed it. :) Have a great day everyone!

Masquerade Read Along, week 4

Hello and welcome to the final week of the Masquerade Read Along. This week we are hosted by Veronica over at Mostly Reviews. This week is the last week of questions with winners chosen next week on Cambria's blog. I have to say, I have really enjoyed meeting everyone during this Read Along and look forward to doing many more! Now, onto the questions...

Chapters 24-31
Final discussion questions

1. Heven develops a new “supernatural power”. She remarks that it isn’t that exciting of a power. Is this a power you would like to have, if not what kind of supernatural power would you like to have? I wouldn’t mind being able to see auras and I’m sure there’s a reason Heven has that ability. If I got to choose what supernatural power I had, I would pick telepathy or telekinesis. To be able to read minds or move things with my mind would be awesome!

2. Which character do you think makes the biggest internal change throughout the course of this book?  Is there a situation in your life that you can reflect back on as an experience that changed your life for the better? I think Heven made the biggest internal change throughout the book. She started out a shy, quiet, practically friendless girl who hid from the world because of her scars and ended up a confident young woman without the scars. She literally faced her demons and won. I do have a situation in my life that I look back on as life-changing (a couple, actually). Both were horrible situations that forced me to face who I was at the time and to decide who I would become. I believe I became a better person because of those incidents.

3. Who is your favorite character and why? This is actually the hardest question for me. I feel like I love equally the characters I’m supposed to (Heven, Sam, her grandmother) and despise the ones I’m supposed to (mainly China and the other hellhounds). So I don’t know that I really have a favorite. I’m indifferent about her mom (though her attitude needs a serious adjustment) and I’m suspicious of Logan. I don’t think I can answer this question yet. But I’m definitely rooting for Heven and Sam in the rest of the novels.

4. When the book ends the reader has an idea of what the next book will involve. Do you think the book ended in the appropriate place? Though I felt the book dragged a bit after Heven returned from the dead, I understood that certain things still had to happen. I do feel the book ended appropriately and cannot wait to find out what happens next in Charade.

5. Do you have any predictions for the next book in the series, Charade? I get the feeling Logan isn't everything we think he is and I’m afraid to find out he’s not really one of the good guys. I think he will betray Sam and Heven in some way.

6. Did you enjoy participating in this read along?  Will you join in future read alongs? Yes and yes. This is my first read along and I truly enjoyed discussing the book and meeting fellow bloggers/writers to talk about something we all loved. I loved seeing everyone’s opinions on things and having conversations about it. I look forward to my next read along.

Thank you, Cambria and the others for hosting a very fun Read Along. :)

Happy Reading!

Writerly Wednesday - Character Questions and Outlining

Hello, everyone! Welcome to another week of Writerly Wednesday, a weekly meme I created to talk about all thing writerly, whether I'm introducing you to a new author I found (like last week with J.C. Isabella), talking about my own adventures in publishing, or giving out writerly advice, as I'm doing this week. Today I want to talk about developing characters with questions and outlining a plot, two things I didn't realize went together so intricately until I started doing one without the other. :)

Character Questions
When developing characters, you really need to know more than just the basics: height, weight, hair color, eye color, etc. You need to know what makes them tick, what their motivations are, and how they would react in various situations. One way to get to know them better is to answer questions about them. I like to treat it like an interview, sometimes going so far as to write out the scene to get body language as well. A couple great sites I found for character questions include:

http://www.writingclasses.com/InformationPages/index.php/PageID/106 This one is from Gotham Writers Workshop and has 2 questionnaires that can be downloaded in a Word doc to better utilize. I like that they are short questionnaires and ask some great questions.

http://www.squidoo.com/character-development-questions Squidoo has a great questionnaire here that breaks it down into categories, from moral beliefs to specific knowledge, and of course the all important question: why should your audience care about this character?

Plot Outlines
Before I give examples, I just want to point out that until recently (the last couple months), I was pretty much a pantser. I would start writing a book and THEN I would figure out where it was going and write down some of the details. With my newest WIP, I'm actually breaking down the chapters into scenes and with every scene, I'm figuring out where the story is going and what will push it forward. This is new for me (though not new to the publishing/writing world). So, I've come to realize the importance of outlining before writing and want to share a few ideas with you about it.

http://selfpublishingteam.com/6-writing-outline-templates-and-3-reasons-to-use-them/ This site give 6 different outlining templates and how to use them. It also discusses why outlining is important.

http://www.darcypattison.com/plot/29-plot-templates/ This site gives several different plot outline templates. My favorite template is adopted from  Joe Campbell's Hero Journey. There are some on here that I haven't heard of before, but look interesting and ideal to use.

Obviously, knowing your characters is just as important as knowing your plot. Now, I will say that Googling either idea gives you thousands of sites to explore. The ones I shared here are just a couple that caught my attention and that I have recommended to other friends.

How about you? Are you a plotter or pantser? How do you like to outline (if you do)? And what do you do to get to know your characters before you start writing?

Happy Writing!

Masquerade Read Along - week 2

Welcome, everyone, to week 2 of the Masquerade Read Along. I apologize for the lateness of my post to questions for chapters 8-16. I have hardly been home to do anything on the computer! But without further ado, this week's questions and my answers....

1. Sam is admittedly drawn to Heven before they even meet. Why do you think this is? Because I’ve read the entire book, I have two answers to this question. The first, I think it is because of what happens near the end of the book and what Sam and Heven end up meaning to each other. At this point in the book, though, I think it is simply because Heven is so pure and Sam… is not. He’s drawn to her goodness.

2. In an earlier chapter The Hope states that Sam must prove himself. During these chapters Sam does some things – bad things – (covering up murder, fighting, hiding a body, etc.) all to protect Heven and his true identity. Do you think he was right to do these things? I understand why Sam thinks he has to do these things; he’s protecting himself and to protect what was happening between him and Heven. Taking it in that context, yes, I think he did the right thing. That’s not to say I agree with what he did.

3. In chapter twelve Kimber says some things to Heven that make the reader wonder about their friendship. Do you think there is any truth to Kimber’s drunken confessions? If so where do you think Heven and Kimber’s friendship goes from here? I always think there is some truth to a drunken confession. Yes, I think Kimber meant what she said. I think those are things she is always thinking about Heven and, with her tongue loosed by alcohol, they all came spewing out. As for their friendship, I think it will take a lot of work, but I think they can work it out (if Kimber isn’t too self absorbed to apologize to Heven for what she said).

4. Heven is changing, becoming more confident. Do you think that after something like this (her accident and disfigurement) happens to someone that she can ever go back to the person she was before? Do you think she will want to? I think after any life changing event (especially one with physical repercussions), it is impossible to go back to the person you used to. With Heven, she let her scar define who she was after her accident, giving up practically everything from her life Before. But, I think after meeting Sam and the confidence and goodness he brings out in her, I don’t think she would ever want to go back to the person she used to.

5. Towards the end of these set of chapters, Heven finds out Sam’s secret, who he really is. She has a strong reaction. Do you think you would react the same way? Why or why not? I think Heven’s reaction is perfectly normal considering the circumstances. She’s in love with him, ready to confess it to him, and her world turns upside down when she finds out he’s not what she thought he was. She feels betrayed by him. Yes, I would feel the same way and react the same way she did to finding out the truth.

Writerly Wednesday

Hi, everyone! Welcome to another week of Writerly Wednesday, where I share something writerly with you. Today's blog post is just an update of all the things I've been doing in my writerly ways. :)

Since I am still waiting to hear from my publisher about edits (and anxious to get to the actual edits), I've been occupying my time with editing book 2 of the Spiral Defenders series. I've come to realize that since moving a major scene from that book into book 1 (Into the Spiral), I have a lot of rewriting to do. I also keep coming up with small things to change in Into the Spiral. I'm very excited to jump back into Ronnie and Gavin's world (which is a good thing since I still need to rewrite the prequel short story, a second short story later in the series and the last two books of the series). And I really can't wait to share this story with you!

(Yesterday's Tell Me Something Tuesday post talked about book boyfriends and I did include Gavin as one of my boyfriends. You can check it out for a tiny preview of what's to come.)

hand drawn by Amanda Pfender
In addition to editing, I've been coming up with various merchandise ideas. And I'm very excited to say I have an artist on board. Her name is Amanda Pfender and she is a good family friend who also happens to be a phenomenal artist. She has been working on a cover for Into the Spiral since before it got picked up by Otherworld Publications and now she is helping me with merchandising ideas. I know this may seem a bit premature since I still have a little more than EIGHT MONTHS until my book is released, but I figure I might as well plan these things when I think of them. :) Amanda and I are already coming up with several "one of a kind" prize ideas. ;) Check out Gavin from her cover of Into the Spiral to the left.

And that's what's going on in my writing life lately. :) It's been an exciting week so far and I hope it keeps coming.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Masquerade Read Along, week 1

Hello, everyone! As you may have heard, I'm participating in this month's Masquerade Read Along. Each Thursday, 5 questions are asked and answered about a certain number of chapters in the book. This week's questions deal with chapters 1-8. If you haven't picked up this book, I highly recommend it. I have read the whole thing and absolutely loved it. :) But a review is not what we're here for today. Here are this week's questions and my answers:

1. If you were disfigured like Heven (by some sort of accident) do you think you would have reacted the same way as her? (loss of self confidence, hiding yourself, etc)  I can answer this with a resounding YES. Because I am introverted by nature (hard to believe, I know), being disfigured the way Heven was would only add to my insecurities and cause me to want to be even more invisible. BUT I would hope to have someone like Sam who would come along and save me.

 2. Do you think that Kimber’s plan for revenge against Cole (for kissing another girl) is a good idea? NO. It was the worst idea ever. Everyone knows getting revenge by doing the same thing your significant other did always backfires in your face, which it did for Kimber. An eye for an eye might be a saying, but it shouldn’t be a way of life.

 3. In the beginning chapters, Heven is very drawn to Sam but won’t admit it due to her own insecurities. Kimber begins to “date” Sam… do you think that Heven should have spoken up? Do think Kimber should have seen Heven’s real feelings? Yes, I think Heven should have spoken up and told Kimber right away that she was interested in Sam first, but I also understand that Heven was too insecure about her own beauty to say anything at all. And really, I don’t think Kimber would have the ability to see that Heven liked Sam unless Heven spoke up about it; Kimber came off as a bit too self-absorbed for me and this instance and her getting upset with Heven when her feelings for Sam became apparent just proves that.

 4. Masquerade is broken in four separate POV’s: Heven, Sam, The Hate and The Hope. Do you think having multiple POV’s adds depth to the story? Why or why not? Yes. I loved having the multiple POV’s and the intrigue of The Hate and The Hope, not knowing what either of those was until later in the story. Having both of those POV’s give a side of the story that Sam and Heven aren’t able to give and gives the reader a look at things that are happening essentially behind the scenes.

 5. A great source of strength for Heven is her grandmother. Who do you think yours is/would be? I’ll admit this was the hardest question to answer. I just don’t think about where my strength comes from, but now I’ve realized the answer is in front of me every day. My kids. As much as I don’t like my job, some days I continue to go just to show them how to persevere and that sometimes you have to do things you don’t like to do. Despite all the heartache my family has gone through, I have to remain strong for them, even when I let them see me cry. For as much as I tell them they can be whatever they want to be, I strive to make my own dreams come true to show them anything is possible. They keep me strong and I love them eternally for it.
My inspiration, Riley and Kody.
Happy Thursday, everyone!

Writerly Wednesday - Timing is Everything

Hello, everyone, and welcome back for another week of Writerly Wednesday. I originally started this meme to allow me to talk to you about all things writing, whether it be progress on a wip, update on what's going on with the book I'm getting published, or to share websites and people with you I think you will enjoy. :) Today, I talk about the timing of a novel.

I was recently hit of the head with the Timing-Is-Everything stick. I'd started writing a new project after months of writing nothing. I was excited about this book (I still am). I had my MC going to a new, much smaller school where she runs into and ends up in the middle of two warring werewolf packs. So on her first day of school, in about 12k words, I put my MC through everything. Both Alphas flirted with her, took her from the other, and fought over her. By the end of her first day of school, their fighting had resulted in a fistfight. And let me tell you, I was excited about it. I couldn't believe how well I'd done. I had something exciting happening at every turn. It was going to be the greatest book ever!

Then I had a very good friend of mine read it. Here's what she had to say:

"It starts out like Twilight because of moving from a big town to a sort of small foresty town. She knows she hates it. Then later at school she is being fought over by boys like crazy on the first day..... I think the whole experience of being in a new town and seeing everything and her emotions about it without boy involvement needs to be drug out. For example right away she is thinking about Caleb, which is not all that unusual, but I would think she would have talked to Brittney or her boyfriend on the phone before a week of living there. Then once school starts, I would think she would be comparing in her mind where she came from to where she is now. I don't think it is odd that she goes looking for Caleb, but there seems to be too much tug of war going on all of the sudden. I haven't really gotten to know Caleb and Sebastian or even Jessica very much before there is this major war between the boys. And I was a little irritated with Jessica for one minute being gaga over Sebastian and then the next being mad at Caleb then vice versa. It feels like she is too emotionally involved with these guys this early on in the book."

To say I was crushed when I read her thoughts is an understatement. I was furious. At myself for not seeing this. So after a day of fuming and trying to figure out how to fix it, I declared the honeymoon over and got to work. Now I'm back to chapter 11, have just more than 20k words and that same friends is gaga for Caleb but also falling for Sebastian and might even like Jessica by now. Having added roughly 8k of story has helped immensely, allows the reader to get to know the characters before all the tug-of-war crap begins in earnest.

So what exactly is the point of this blog post? Exactly as it's said: Timing is everything! I've learned the hard way that you have to allow the reader to get to know the characters through the first few chapters of the book and spread out the real action of the story, letting things progress at a natural pace instead of the insane 10k one-day fiasco. Now that I've learned my lesson, I know it's one I will remember. :)

To my dear, lovely friend, you know who you are. Thank you for being who you are. This book would not be where it is without you.

Happy Writing, everyone!

Tell Me Something Tuesday

Welcome to another week of Tell Me Something Tuesday, a weekly meme where the lovely Cambria Hebert posts a question and us bloggers answer. This week's question is:

What is it about books that makes you want to blog about them? What do you love
most about blogging?

I simply love reading books. They are my escape, my salvation at times it seems. They are my world - my other world. ;-) I've been to Paris, Ireland, Rome, Texas, the East Coast, the West Coast, and the Pacific Northwest. I have seen the darker side of Manhattan on a couple occasions, and even the Nevernever (which I'm currently visiting again). I love the experience books give me, the journey they take me on. That is why I blog about them. I love to share my experiences, my life, with others. And when I'm not reading, I'm writing. I love to share those worlds with you, too.

So what is it about blogging that I love so much? THE PEOPLE! I love meeting new people and blogging is one way to not only meet them, but to learn a little about them. Since I still feel I am relatively new to this whole blogging thing, I get tickled pink when I meet new people either through my blog, through other's blogs or through weekly memes, such as this one. :-) As the years go on and I become more adept at what I'm doing, I look forward to meeting new people and sharing a bit of my life with them.

Now it's your turn. What makes you blog about books and why do you love blogging so much?

Happy Tuesday!

Opinion Needed Please!

Hi, everyone! Here's the deal. This new book I'm writing has been giving me several problems and even though I'm only in the second draft (after not even finishing the first due to the pacing problems), this first chapter is still kinda bugging me. A trusted friend has read it and says there is something off about it. Please, help me out and tell me what you think of it. I would appreciate all kinds of feedback, the good, bad and constructive. :)

Chapter 1

My mom moved me and my brother to Hell a week ago. Now, mom was bringing us home after registering us at the Shadow Creek School – not high school, just school. Two long buildings with chipping white paint and maroon roofs made up the school, one for the lower campus (grades K-7) and one for the upper campus (grades 8-12). It was so small, it was ridiculous. Back in Chicago, my high school had three buildings on a sprawling campus that took up several city blocks. I felt like I would suffocate.
My anger built as mom drove the six blocks across town to our new home. There was a general store, which carried everything except food, a grocery store, a tavern-slash-inn on the corner, and two diners. Nothing had a brand name like Walmart or McDonald’s; no, they were all named things like Bubba’s Pancake Emporium and Ray’s General Store. I felt like I had gone back in time a hundred years.
We finally arrived at our cute little shack and I jumped out without a word to my mother. Glaring at everything in sight, I followed her inside, stripped off my black hoodie, shoved my feet into running shoes and finally looked up at her.
“I can’t believe you did this to me,” I growled at her and slammed out of the house. I vaguely heard Bryce call after me but that only made me pump my legs faster. I had to get away from there. I needed to get back to Chicago, surround myself in the familiar sounds and smog. All this greenery and fresh air was going to kill me.
I ran track for two years at my old high school and my legs seemed to remember what to do. My breathing slowed as my legs fell into a comfortable rhythm, my shoes slapping against the only asphalt paved road in town. Trees surrounded me on both sides of the two-lane highway. My mind continued to race. My BFF’s face flashed in front of my eyes, then my old boyfriend’s, and I stumbled, flailing forward and just barely catching myself before falling flat on my face. I missed Brittany and Brad so much my chest ached and I couldn’t breathe; I hadn't talked to either of them since before moving here almost a week ago. Why did mom do this to me? Why did we have to move to this little God forsaken town at the edge of nowhere, hundreds of miles away from my friends?
I stopped running and doubled over, my hands on my knees as I tried to breathe through the onslaught of emotions and tears. School started in three days, my senior year. Instead of taking a limo and going to Fogo de Chao for Prom, I’d probably end up in a horse drawn buggy and be taken to Bubba’s. I shuddered and crumpled to the hot street, unable to hold in my misery any longer. My body shook as sobs consumed me. My life was over.
I’m not sure how long I sat on the side of the road bawling my eyes out. All I know is when the tears finally stopped, my face was blotchy, my eyes were swollen and my head was pounding. Cursing my mom for the headache she’d now given me, I picked myself up and continued down the road out of town, starting at a jog and finally going up to a full blown sprint. But as fast as I ran, I knew I couldn’t escape my new excuse for a life. I clenched my fists and pumped my arms harder, willing my legs to go faster. I felt like I was going to burst with the need to escape.
Out of nowhere, a guy appeared next to me. Dressed similarly to me in a pair of red running shorts and a white t-shirt stretched just right across his broad shoulders, he fell into step with me. I glanced at him, noticing how his golden hair gleams in the sunlight, but he didn’t look at me; his eyes stayed focused on whatever’s ahead of us. Irritated that my pity party was being crashed (no matter how hot this guy was), I sighed and sped up. He stayed in step with me. I glared at him and tried again. He was still there. A growl of frustration escaped my throat and he finally looked at me. I was momentarily sidetracked by his brilliantly blue eyes and stumbled once again. His hand snaked out and his arm wrapped around my waist to catch me before I fell. Blood rushed up my neck to my cheeks. Taken down by a pair of blue eyes. I would have giggled if I wasn’t so mortified. He chuckled as we stopped and he lets me go.
“Are you okay?” he asked. I nodded, irritated because I really want him to hold me again.
“I’m fine,” I replied, a little harsher than I meant to be. I winced but he didn’t seem affected by my tone.
“So, what are you running from?” he continued. I reached up, wrapping my long dark hair into a rope, and wrapped it around my hand to keep it off my neck. I lifted my chin and looked into his eyes, watching them wander down my body before they came back to mine. He didn’t even seem embarrassed to be caught checking me out.
“Who says I’m running from anything? Maybe I just like to run,” I replied with a smirk.
“If you like to run, I’m sure I would have seen you around before now.”
“How could you? I just got here.” My mood soured and I stared off into the trees, scowling at all their green leaves and brown bark. I shuddered, desperately missing the steel buildings and packed streets of my hometown.
“Where did you come from?”
His question snapped my attention back to him. I sighed, embarrassed that I had to blink more tears out of my eyes. Why did I have to cry in front of this hot guy? He was going to think I was absolutely mental.
“Chicago,” I told him, my voice catching on the word.
“No wonder you’re so miserable; this must be like your own personal hell compared to the city.”
“Have you ever been?”
“Kinda. My parents took my friends and me to Six Flags Great America one weekend last summer.” He rubbed the back of his neck like he was embarrassed by this. I laughed out loud, thinking he was adorable. He ran a hand through his gorgeous hair, dimples appearing in his cheeks when he suddenly smiled. My knees weakened.
“Going to Great America is nothing like going into the city,” I finally told him, my words breathy from all the fog suddenly clouding my mind.
“It’s the closest I’ve ever been; it’s not like I go north much.” His smile faltered and I wondered if he was irritated he has to admit that. I would have been. I nodded to let him know I understood.
“Someday I’ll take you to the city and show you all my favorite places to go,” I promised him, laying a hand on his sun-bronzed forearm. His warm skin made my fingers tingle and I sighed, this time content.
A twig snapped and a low growl emitted from the trees nearby. I instinctively moved closer to the guy—and realized I didn’t even know what to call him. A golden god? My thoughts were interrupted by another low growl and I gasped, my eyes widening as a small grey wolf stalked out of the trees to our right. It stopped not even ten feet away from us, lowered down on its haunches, its lips curled back as it snarled as us. The guy pushed me behind him and I clung to the back of his shirt, balling the soft fabric in my fists.
His back muscles rippled beneath my fists as he turned his head, keeping one eye on the wolf as he said out of the side of his mouth, “Whatever happens, don’t make any sudden movements or she’ll attack you.”
I nodded, wondering how he knew the wolf looking to make lunch out of us was female. Maybe because she was smaller, I decided as I gulped. The guy, now known as my hero, turned his attention back to the slowly approaching wolf. I peeked around him and dug my nails into his back, cowering behind him. His back rippled again and heat blasted me from his skin. I leaned into him, oddly comforted by his hot body.
“Go away; leave us alone,” he yelled at the wolf. I gasped, holding my breath as I waited for the wolf to pounce on us. The rippling of his body picked up tempo until it was like he vibrated under my touch, sending the heat and vibration into my body until I shook with him. His hands fisted at his sides. My lungs burned, begging for air, but I couldn’t release the breathe I held until the wolf was gone.
“I said go!” he bellowed. The wolf whimpered and scampered away. I wanted to do the same, my body forced into flight mode by his command. The air whooshed out of my lungs and I felt dizzy as he spun around to catch me, crushing my body against his.
“Are you all right?” he asked, his voice sounding more like a growl. His hand gently held my head against his massive chest. His heart beat steadily in my ear. I managed to move my head enough to look up at him and blinked up at his furrowed brow and curled back upper lip – he looked ready to take on a whole pack of wolves. He saw me glance up at him and immediately forced his features to relax, bring back his dimpled grin. I relaxed with him.
“Are you okay?” he asked again, his voice much gentler this time. I nodded and he stepped back, keeping his hands on my shoulders in case I wasn’t quite steady yet. I wasn’t. I swayed towards him and then shivered, cold without his warmth.
“You’re cold,” he declared, concern etched into his features. “Are you dizzy? Do you feel nauseous?”
I blinked up at him again before realizing he was waiting for a response. I said the only thing that came to mind. “You’re just so hot.”
He chuckled and I realized what I’d said. My cheeks burned, a new level of mortification setting in. I opened my mouth to explain only to snap it shut again; anything I said would only make this worse.
“It’s okay; I think you’re pretty hot, too,” he teased me, grinning at me with his adorable dimples. A smile tugged at my mouth as laughter bubbled up within me. Soon, both of us were laughing over the stupidity of our conversation. My laughter died when he draped an arm over my shoulders and turned me around, walking down the street the way I’d come. He was walking me home.
I melted a little at the sentiment and then the reality of what just happened crashed over me. We’d barely taken five steps when I stopped and looked up at him.
“How did you do that?” My voice shook with fear. He pursed his lips and let out a breath through his nose, flaring his nostrils. I suddenly wondered if he was going to snarl at me or yell like he had at the wolf. He sighed and some of my fear ebbed away.
“The trick to dealing with any kind of wild animal is that you have to show it who’s boss,” he declared and continued walking.
I mulled over that for a moment, biting the inside of my cheek as I replayed the scene with the wolf in my mind. Then I thought about everything I knew about wolves. They were pack animals, including when they hunted. They weren’t known for attacking humans unless they were hurt – and from what I could see, that bitch hadn't been hurt. But maybe her pups were nearby, I argued with myself and moved on. Wolves asserted dominance by fighting or wrestling and biting down on the other’s beck, making the lesser dominant wolf bow down. I pictured the guy biting that she-wolf’s scruff and making her submit. I shook my head; the wolf would have torn him to shreds. He’d done the only thing left to protect us.
“Well, thank you,” I told him with a smile. He returned my smile, visibly relaxing. I would my arm through his and we continued to my house.
“Do you go to Shadow Creek School?” I ventured nervously. We’d walked a while in companionable silence, something I’d never shared with a guy before. I always felt the need to fill the silence.
“Yeah, I’ll be a senior. What about you?”
“The same.” Yes! I wanted to jump up and down but thought that might make a bad impression. I bit back a smile and forced myself not to giggle.
“Now that we’ve established we’re both in school and you’ve saved my life, who are you?” I asked as we neared my house. He chuckled.
“Caleb Hunter. And you’re Jessica Teal,” he told me. My mouth dropped open and he had the decency to look embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck again. “It’s a very small town so new folks coming in are top news. Everyone knows who you and your brother are; it’s Bryce, right?”
I nodded, unable to form a coherent thought. I couldn’t believe he already knew who I was, or that the town was talking about us. I remembered my mouth still hung open and snapped it shut, now embarrassed I’d been gaping at him like a fish out of water. Again, I wondered what had possessed my mom to move us here. Nothing would be private if everyone was already in our business.
Caleb saw my discomfort and put his hand on my shoulder, drawing my attention back to him. My eyes met his and I immediately calmed down again, warm tingles spreading from my shoulder through my entire body. His brow furrowed and a frown turned down his smile as he removed his hand. I wondered what I’d done wrong. I swallowed hard and looked away.
“I guess I’d better go,” I said. He nodded, still watching me warily.
“Yeah, I’ll see you Monday at school,” he replied and turned to walk away. I sighed, my shoulders slumped as I continued up to my front door. When I turned back, he was already gone.
“Who was that?” my mom asked as I walked inside. Of course she’d been watching from the window! Because now that we were here, nothing was private.
“Nobody,” I snapped at her and headed back to my new bedroom. I needed to finish unpacking—and try to figure out what just happened with Caleb so I wouldn’t do it again when we saw each other at school.
